Government's response to the 'Building a Safer Future' consultation

On 2 April the Government published its response to the 'Building a Safer Future' consultation.  The document sets out the Government's proposals for a reformed building safety system.  This includes establishing a new national Building Safety Regulator who will be responsible for implementing and enforcing a more stringent regulatory regime for buildings in scope.

The scope will apply to apply to all multi-occupied residential buildings of 18 metres or more in height or which are more than 6 storeys (whichever is reached first).

It will apply to the life cycle of new builds and from the occupation stage for existing buildings following " a suitable transition period".

In due course it is likely that the regime will apply to other buildings.  Which buildings this might cover will be determined on "emerging risk evidence".
