In my previous blog I discussed the first five points of the new 10-point plan for a transition to net-zero.
The final five points in this plan are:
6. Jets and maritime: Supporting research for zero-emission planes and ships, sustainable fuels and the development of clean maritime technology.
7. Homes and public buildings: Moving away from fossil fuel boilers and aiming to install 600,000 heat pumps every year by 2028. To support this and improve the efficiency of homes, schools and hospitals generally, the Green Homes Grant will be extended until 2022 and the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme will receive additional funding.
8. Carbon capture technology: This captures CO2 from power generation, low carbon hydrogen production and industrial processes and stores it deep underground where it cannot enter the atmosphere. £200m will be allocated to create new carbon capture clusters in areas such as the North East, the Humber, North West, Scotland and Wales.
9. Nature: Planting 30,000 hectares of trees each year and restoring nature by rewilding 30,000 football pitches worth of countryside. It is still to be confirmed whereabouts this will all be.
10. Innovation and finance: Making London the global centre of green finance, by focusing on progressing the technologies needed to decarbonise our economies and transition to net zero. To accelerate this, an investment portfolio will be created which will focus on 10 priority areas which correspond with this plan. More details on this are expected in 2021.
