Building Safety - second staircases

Since 13 February 2023, there has been a requirement at planning stage for residential buildings over 30 metres in height within Greater London to provide for a second staircases.  It seems likely that there will shortly be a requirement for all new residential buildings  anywhere in the country over 18 metres in height to have two staircases.

Yesterday the government announced that it was their intention to mandate a second staircase in new residential buildings over 18 metres.  It has said that it will work 'rapidly' with industry and regulators over the summer to' design transitional arrangements with the aim of securing the viability of projects that are already underway, avoiding delays where there are more appropriate mitigations'
