New consultation seeks views on the proposed legislative provisions governing the appointment and operation of the Commissioner by 5th August 2021.
The Government committed to the establishment of an independent Patient Safety Commissioner for England in the Medicines and Medical Devices Act 2021 which received Royal Assent on 11 February 2021 and on 11 April established the Commissioner position and its main duties and powers.
The introduction of the Patient Safety Commissioner also follows the recommendation of the Independent Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Review, First Do No Harm, published in July 2020 by Baroness Cumberlege.
The work of the Patient Safety Commissioner will continue work on improving patient safety, acting as a patient champion and voice. Core to this role is improving patient safety in the context of the use of medicines and medical devices.
Consultation – and how to respond
The proposals on the appointment and operation of the Patient Safety Commissioner cover a range of issues including terms of office for the role, remuneration and funding and the establishment of an advisory panel to support the Commissioner. Consultation responses will feed into the required secondary legislation.
