The new government funding announced on 3 October 2023 will allow each Integrated Care System in England to apply for a share of £30million to roll out innovative technology in their region. Applications are expected to open this month for project delivery by 1 April 2024.
The announcement refers to ICSs using the funding to buy medical technology to reduce hospital waiting lists, with the potential to speed up diagnoses and improve care for patients. Technology could include wearable devices to monitor health conditions remotely, the expansion of virtual wards designed to care for people at home or the use of drones to facilitate logistical solutions.
ICSs with fully costed digital transformations plans can submit bids to the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England to access the funds to roll out the technology – whatever that may be – sometime this month.
Unfortunately, the DHSC and NHSE’s timeline doesn’t allow for those ICSs with less developed digital plans to take advantage of this pool of money.
