The development of the 10-acre site is being delivered through a long-term collaboration between the University and the UK’s leading property provider for the science and technology sector, Bruntwood SciTech, a 50:50 joint venture between Bruntwood and Legal & General. It will lead to 657,000 sq ft state-of-the-art lab, incubation and office space for organisations involved with health and life sciences. The Birmingham Health Innovation Campus is expected to create around 10,000 new jobs and will be dedicated to translational health and life sciences research.
The firm’s Real Estate Group advised the University on the procurement and selection of a long term development partner. The specialist team worked with the University, alongside Avison Young, on all aspects of the project including environmental aspects, grant funding, state aid issues, planning and construction contracts.
Nick Abbott, Partner at Mills & Reeve said: “It could not be more timely and appropriate for the University of Birmingham to be delivering a project within the local community and for the national benefit which will be a catalyst for health innovation.”
Nicola Cárdenas Blanco, Interim Director of Legal Services, the University of Birmingham commented: “Working with Mills & Reeve has been incredibly collaborative greatly assisted by their experience in the life sciences and education sectors. This is a fantastic development which will benefit the University’s collaborations, and positively impact both local and global communities."
