Judges were impressed by the use of the Brazilian footballing wonder kid to demystify legal issues in the football industry, calling it “novel” and “fun”.
Mills & Reeve created the fictional Brazilian footballer called Reevaldo Marcelo do Torano (known as “Reevaldo”). Readers can follow Reevaldo’s career on www.reevaldo.com and how he navigates the often complex legal landscape. The articles cover legal issues in in the football industry such as player transfers, contract negotiations, agent relationships, image rights and a host of other common issues.
The Awards, now in their fifth year, are open to law firms, chambers, in-house legal departments and alternative business structures. They celebrate outstanding achievement within the profession. The win for Reevaldo is the second time the Mills & Reeve team have picked up the award for Best Marketing Innovation. In 2018 the team won for www.cohabitation-law.co.uk, the first dedicated resource for couples who live together but aren’t married. The firm were also nominated for five other Legal Week Innovation awards this year.
Carol Couse, Partner in the sports team, said: “We are delighted to have been recognised for our work on Reevaldo and to have been shortlisted in five further categories. The legal issues in football are often complicated and can be difficult to understand, for professionals and fans. By using Reevaldo to illustrate the legal questions that can come up in a footballers career, we hope we have helped to demystify the issues. This award shows how far we have come in the innovation space over recent years and demonstrates our commitment to providing our clients with a service that is always on target.“
