Building Safety: second staircase news

In July 2023 I posted a blog about the requirement in London at planning stage for a second staircase in residential buildings over 30 metres in height.  I said it seemed likely that there would soon be a requirement, both inside and outside London, for a second staircase in new residential buildings over 18 metres.

On 19 February, the Secretary of State Michael Gove, gave a written statement which states that the Building Safety Regulator will publish 'the new guidance on second staircases before the end of March, making it clear the need for a second staircase in new multi-occupancy residential buildings that have a top occupied storey above 18 metres'.  The statement goes onto say that 'evacuation lifts will not be called for as a matter of course'.
