Shaping the future

The coronavirus pandemic has been a difficult time for everyone but as we all try and find our way in the “new normal” we have continued to advise our clients on a wide range of cutting edge work.

  • In April, Cambridge University opened a new laboratory aiming to achieve 30,000 coronavirus tests a day. Since then, with the help of this laboratory, the Government has ramped up testing to 200,000 per day to help deal with the pandemic.
  • An innovative secondment style arrangement has helped us support the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), a Norwegian not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to stimulate and accelerate the development of vaccines against emerging infectious diseases and enable access to these vaccines for people during outbreaks. Most recently, CEPI has worked with the World Health Organization (WHO), global health authorities and other partners to develop vaccine candidates against COVID-19.
  • Our head of sports law, Mark Hovell, has been appointed to The Premier League's new judicial panel which will adjudicate over disputes and disciplinary cases for players, clubs, managers and the league.
  • Ambienta, a European private equity fund focused on industrial growth by investing in companies driven by environmental trends, has carried out a management buy-out of UK business, Create Flavours Limited. We were instructed by Pedersoli, a leading Italian independent law firm, acting for Ambienta to advise on the UK aspects of the deal and on the acquisition.
  • Cambridge-based Iontas has been sold to FairJourney Biologics in Portugal. We advised on the GMO Capital backed deal for the founding shareholder.
  • Woodward Veterinary Practice has been acquired by industry giant Linnaeus. This deal took place despite the unique challenges set by the logistical issues faced with the lockdown, self-isolation and advisors working from home. We acted in a legal capacity to the shareholders.
  • We’ve been retained by the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) to advise their members at more than 40 clubs on negotiating furloughs and wage deferrals. We also reviewed the protocols and policies around Project Restart, from the Premier League and Championship clubs on behalf of the players.
  • Our client, Final Replay '66, replayed the 1966 World Cup Final while raising more than £400,000 for the National Emergencies Trust (NET).  Our real estate team has completed a £62 million purchase and development funding for a UK pension fund.
