The team is led by Andrew Tobin, a recognised leader in field of political violence insurance. Andrew co-authored War Risks and Terrorism (Insurance Institute of London, 2007).

Our lawyers’ deep experience in this class includes representing re/insurers on the 9/11 attacks, the Thailand “Redshirt” riots of 2010, the Arab Spring, the civil war in Yemen, riots in Mexico and Chile, tribal attacks on energy projects in Papua New Guinea (2019), the US withdrawal from Afghanistan (2019), civil unrest in Myanmar (2021), the Freedom Convoy in Ottawa (2022) and espionage in London (2023).

We advise both all-risk, and political violence re/insurers in respect of political violence.

  • Successfully defending political violence reinsurers facing $40m claim arising from Allied 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan (proceedings in New York and London, including anti-suit and anti-anti suit injunctions). The first and only standalone political violence policy dispute to come before the courts: Hamilton v (1) Afghan Global (2) Anham USA and others [2024] EWHC 1426 (Comm)
  • Advising/defending political violence reinsurers regarding Mexico Petrol unrest 2017 and Chile unrest 2019
  • Advising political violence insurers on coverage of agribusiness, Myanmar unrest 2020
  • Advising political violence insurers on coverage regarding Freedom Convoy unrest in Canada 2022
  • Advising political violence insurers on coverage implications of threats/espionage by hostile state
  • Advising global CAR/energy insurers on violent tribal attacks on sites in Far East ($100m+ claim)
  • Defending and advising cargo/war on land insurers for claims arising out of the Yemen Civil War
  • Defending political violence insurers for multiple claims arising out of the Thailand unrest, including interaction with All Risks policies
